We are pleased to offer another pair of games from the recent City of London Chess Club Championship. In the first Messrs. Herbert Jacobs and George Thomas, two of the strongest London players, engage in a spirited battle in which the former launches a rather speculative attack, sacrificing two pieces in return for four pawns. Mr. Thomas, unshaken, defends well and later decides the contest in his favor by means of a direct attack of his own. Notes based on those by the winner.
The following struggle between Messrs. Loman and Watts from the preliminary tournament is notable in particular for its pawn endgame, which we invite the reader to examine closely. Black evidently needed to foresee his 45th move when making his 38th.
