City of London Chess Club Championship Final: Mr. George A. Thomas claims first prize

We have received from London the final standings of this 9-man tournament, along with a selection of excellent games played during the latter rounds of the event.  First prize and the championship fell to Mr. George A. Thomas with the fine total of 7 points scored from eight games played.  Second prize was claimed by Mr. H.G. Cole with 6 points, followed by Mr. W. Ward and Herr Edward Lasker, with 5 and 4 1/2 points respectively.  Messrs. Loman, Davidson, Jacobs, Müller, and Walker rounded out the field.  We have presented a crosstable below.

The result of the tourney remained in doubt until the end, as Mr. Thomas faced Mr. Ward in the final round, when a victory by the latter would have placed both players in a triple tie for first place with Mr. Cole, all on 6 points.  Mr. Thomas, however, needing only a draw to assure himself of the title, played a steady game, at last taking advantage when his opponent, for whom only victory would suffice, overpressed in the attempt to win.  The Champion has graciously provided a few notes to the game.

The games included in this latest dispatch were so numerous, and of such high quality, that limitations of space prevent us from presenting today all those worthy of publication.  We can assure our readers that the remainder, all well deserving of attention, will appear in these pages within the next few days.
